Number of Female Research Directors for National Research and Development Projects Remains One-fifth of Men
In the number of research directors who have the responsibility, overall control and right of decision-making for the entire study, female only represent one-fifth of male.
In total number of research directors, female accounted for 7,252 persons while male accounted for 36,002 persons. By age, gender gap of research director was small with 552 female under 30 years old with 809 male under age 30. However at age 31-40, there were 2,494 female and 6,323 male, a threefold difference in size. The age range of the largest difference in the number of research directors was 41-50 with 2,826 female and 15,014 male. Compared to the age range of 31-40, the number of female research directors only increased by 332, while male was sharply increased by 8,691. In the age range of 51-60, there were 1,177 female and 11,049 male where for female, the number was decreased by almost half(1,649 persons) compared to the other age range, but for male, it was only decreased to 3,965. It was found in the age group of 70 or more, male research directors out numbered the female. This showed there are more male research directors than female across all ages.
The largest gap between male and female research directors was shown in the age range of 30-40 where they are actively involved in economic activity.
Considering that research director is the decision maker for the entire study, it was found the gender gap in socio-economic activities was large.
