2010~2016 Number of Gender Unemployment Beneficiaries
This is the result of dividing the number of unemployment benefit beneficiaries between 2010 and 2016 by gender based on the Employment Insruance Statistical Yearbook of the Korea Employment Information Service. Looking at the number of unemployment benefit beneficiaries in 2016, there were 480,608 women and 473,293 men. This shows just over half of all beneficiaries were women (50.4%).
After 2010, the number of unemployment benefit beneficiaries has declined especially since 2014. In 2010, the number of unemployment benefit beneficiaries was 584,679 for women and 751,766 for men. The number of women beneficiaries increased slightly by 2013, reaching 589,614 and 615,522 in 2012 and 2013 respectively. Men also showed decreasing number of beneficiaries around the same period where in 2012, there were 677,813 beneficiaries and in 2013, there were 675,164 beneficiaries. In 2014, both women and men showed sharp decrease in taking the benefits. For women, there were 476,166 beneficiaires and for men there were 494,902 beneficiaries. By 2015, there were 474,854 women beneficiaries and 475,900 men beneficiaires.
Meanwhile, the share of women in unemployment benefit beneficiaries has steadily increased. It increased 2.8% p from 43.7% in 2010 to 46.5% in 2012, and women accounted for 47.7% in 2013. This increase continued reaching 49.0% and 49.9% in 2014 and 2015, respectively. And in 2016 it was 50.5%, which accounted more than half in total number of beneficiaires.
