2002~2017 Number of Female Professors by Year
This is the result of a three-year cycle of looking at the number of female professors from 2002 to 2017, based on the Basic Statistics on Education of the Korean Educational Development Insitute. During the period, the number of professors, associate professors, and assistant professors all increased year by year, which naturally increased the total number of professorships held by female. Looking at specific figures, the total number of female professors rose from 7,741 in 2002 to 11,101 in 2008, exceeding 10,000 persons. In 2014, the number of female professors exceeded 20,000, with 20,902. In 2017, it was 22,830, which is 2.9 times more than in 2002.
By the job title, it can be seen that the number of assistant professors has increased relatively. Professors increased from 3,117 in 2002 to 5,096 in 2011 and in 2017, this figure was 6,925, a 2.2-fold increase from 2002. Looking at the number of female associate professors, it increased from 2,184 in 2002 to 3,112 in 2008. In 2017, the number increased to 5,408, which is 2.5 times more than in 2002. The number of assistant professors increased from 2,440 in 2002 to 4,643 in 2011. In 2014, the number grew to 10,255. This is an increase of more than 4.2 times compared to 2002, and more than twice as much as in 2011. The number of female assistant professors in 2017 is 10,497, which is 4.3 times more than in 2002.
