Title 2007~2016 Economically Inactive Population by Sex

This is the result of economically inactive population trend for 10 years from 2007 through Statistics Korea’s “Economically Active Population Survey.” As of the end of 2016, there were 10,604,000 economically inactive* women and 5,564,000 men.

 

In 2007, the number of female economically inactive population was 9,994,000 and male 4,960,000. Economically inactive population grew slightly each year and for both women and men by 2013, it reached 10,710,000 and 5,512,000 respectively. In 2014, the number of economically inactive women declined to 10,586,000 and 5,409,000 for men. Then both in 2015, and 2016, the number of economically inactive men and women slightly increased.

 

*Economically Inactive Population : It comprises all persons who were neither employed nor unemployed during the reference period used to measure current activity who are above 15 years old. In other words, it refers to housewives who are responsible for housework and child rearing at home, students who attend school, elderly people who cannot work, people with physical or mental disabilities and those who are voluntarily engaged in charity or religious organizations.
