Title 1,889,096 single elderly households in 2015, of which females accounted for 75.8%
Date 2017-12-25

According to the 2015 Population and Housing Census from the Statistics Korea, the number of single elderly households over 60 was 1,889,096, of which single female elderly households were 1,431,972 households and single male elderly households were 457,124 households. When looking by gender, the percentage of single female and male elderly households accounted for 75.8% and 24.1% respectively, which demonstrates that three out of four single elderly households are women.
In a comparison between 2000 and 2010, the number of single elderly households has consistently increased. In 2010, the number of single female and male elderly households over 60 was 589,381 households and 117,201 households respectively. In 2010, the number of single female and male elderly households was 1,012,241 households and 308,389 households respectively, which shows that the female percentage accounted for 76.6%.
On the other hand, it needs to noted that the overall number of single elderly households has almost doubled: from 706,582 households in 2000, 1,320,630 households in 2010, and 1,889,096 households in 2015. As the country's aging society is a reality, it implies that the number will keep rising and more active policy measures are needed.
