Number of lawmaker candidates and elected lawmakers by sex


- In the 2008 general election, the female candidates totaled 132 persons and 14 females were elected as lawmakers. In the meantime, the male candidates totaled 981 persons and 231 males were elected as lawmakers. In the 2012 general election, the male candidates recorded 839 persons and 227 males were elected as lawmakers. Whereas, the female candidates recorded 63 persons and 19 females were elected as lawmakers. In other words, females occupied just 7.7 percent of the total lawmakers. This percentage showed an increase compared to 5.7 percent in the 2008 general election.

- The number of female lawmakers is a representative indicator that measures women's participation in politics and empowerment. Effective policies are needed to improve female representativeness in the political sector.
